Description
Some organisms live in close association of other organisms and both partners to mutual benefit, termed as symbiosis. rhizobium spp. As a striking example they occur in root nodules of leguminous plants and help in fixing the free nitrogen of the atmosphere in the soil for the plants, which in return provide carbohydrates and protection to the bacteria.
Rhizobium also known as nitrogen-fixing bacteria and add to the fertility of soil. These root nodules are responsible for fixing atmospheric nitrogen to plants in the easily available form. it is present in the root nodules as pleomorphic forms (bacteroids). These bacteria enable plants to grow in soil where no nitrogenous fertilizers are present.
The leguminous plants make the soil rich in nitrogen, and therefore are also used as green manure. Nitrogen fixation varies from crop to crop. rhizobium increases, plant nutrition, root growth and yield. it reduces the population of harmful organisms and disease occurrence significantly.
